Mojo Trainer

John Good

John Good between Mojo Partners Carol Nichols and Fred Taylor

Though he calls Louisville, Kentucky his home; John was born and raised in Kildare, Ireland—the horse capital of Ireland and where The Curragh Racecourse is located.  He is based at the pastoral setting of High Pointe Farm and Training Center in LaGrange, Kentucky.

Before setting out on his own, John was an assistant trainer for Bob Baffert for eight years, and he ran Bob’s Kentucky operation for four years.  Prior to that he worked for Neil Drysdale and the legendary Dermot Weld.

When speaking about his training practices, John believes in treating each horse as an individual.  “You have to train them separately,” John explains.  “I go over every horse under my care, and I train them based on their potential.  I give each horse personal attention.”   When asked about medications and the track vet, John said that he learned from Baffert that you use medications as a last resort.  In fact, if they can’t get the job done under their own power, then they’re probably not going to get the job done at all.  “I’m very ‘old school’ in my practices,” John elaborated, “and I prefer treating minor issues with ice, hot water, salts, and topical solutions.  I will use natural supplements to promote good joint health.”
