Racing Debut for Shez for You
The 3rd jewel of the Mojo Trio, Shez for You (by Macho Uno out of Shebelongstoyou) ran for the first time in a 4.5 furlong maiden special race at Lone Star Park (LS) on Sunday, May 22.
“I'm pleased with the Mojo Filly's performance today,” said Fred Taylor, Mojo’s
CEM. “And, she gave us some encouraging signs of her potential.”
Despite drawing the #1 post (closest to the rail, and not the ideal spot for a first race because it can be confining to the horses), Shez for You didn't seem to be bothered by being tucked on the inside. She didn't back off and she went after the front runners.
"She was clam while waiting for the other horses to load," Fred explained. "And, when the gates opened, she came out clean and ran straight."
Down the back stretch, Jockey Lindy Wade let the Filly get a feel for the pace of the race. Around the turn, he said Shez for You started to play around a bit; but he gathered the reigns to get her mind back to business. Cruising past the ¼ pole, Wade gave the filly a couple of taps with the whip and she responded by picking up the pace from the top of the stretch. With a furlong to go, the Filly dug in and came running along the rail. By the 16 pole, under a comfortable hand ride, Shez for You passed the horse that was backing out from 2nd, but was caught by 3 other horses that were barreling down the center of the track. At the wire, there was a group of 5 horses separated by several lengths with Shez for You in the mix settling for 5th.
"I'm happy she had a clean/safe trip,” Mojo's Trainer, JR Caldwell, said. “She handled the conditions very well, and she should move forward from this experience."
After the race, Shez for You returned to the rail with a spring in her step, her head was up, and she was breathing easy.
"It was like she was telling us: Hey guys, that was fun,” Fred pointed out. "And, back in the barn, she was alert, ate her dinner, and enjoyed the attention she was getting. These are all good signs of a happy horse that wasn't bothered by what we asked her to do."
Shez for You will get a day off and then she'll be back to work getting ready for her next race in June. So, stay tuned for upcoming racing info about the Mojo Filly, as well as more exciting news on our other Mojo Runners!
