Mojo Race Recap: Lucky's Debut at Sam Houston Park

March 11, 2015

Mojo's three-year-old Colt, Luckbyjimminy (by Yesbyjimminy out of Lucky Wish), made his racing debut in a six furlong maiden special race at Sam Houston Park (SHP) on Tuesday, March 10.  Lucky had been off for six months recuperating after a having a chip removed from his knee, and this was the first start of his young racing career.

“I’ve been looking forward to seeing this guy run,” said Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM.

Mojo bought Luckbyjimminy and Bling It On Baby (Filly by Pomeroy out of Majestic Glitter) together at the OBS 2YO In Training last June.  Late in the summer, while they were getting ready to race, Luckbyjimminy had to be turned out after a chip in his knee was discovered that needed to be surgically removed.

"Lucky recovered nicely from the procedure, he’s sound, and he’s been training well since January," Fred explains.  "Our goal this year has been to have Lucky ready for racing at Lone Star Park, and the timing of the race at the end of the SHP Meet fit in nicely with his training schedule.”

Starting from Post Position #2, Luckbyjimminy came out of the gate a step slow on a muddy track; but he quickly rallied to get up with the front runners going down the backstretch.  Into the far turn, Luckbyjimminy held his own in 3rd; but, at the top of the stretch, he quickly tired and the rider wrapped him up at the 3/16 pole to save him to race another day.  As Lucky coasted home in the final furlong, he was passed by the other horses and finished last.

"Despite the track conditions and finish position, we accomplished what was needed,” Fred continued.  “Lucky had a positive first race experience and he showed us that he has a competitive spirit.  He seems to be eager to run and has a pretty good turn of foot too.  And, with some additional training, he’ll be a fun horse to watch in the near future."

"Lucky handled himself well for his first time out,” reports JR Caldwell, Mojo’s Trainer.  “I’m glad we were able to give him some actual race experience—it’s something we’ll be able to build on, and I think he’ll be a solid runner for us at the Lone Star Park Meet this spring.”

So, stay tuned for upcoming racing info about Luckbyjimminy, as well as more exciting news on our other Mojo Runners.
