Mojo Race Recap: Luckbyjimminy at Lone Star Park

May 1, 2015

Lucky LS 1May15

Mojo's three-year-old Gelding, Luckbyjimminy (by Yesbyjimminy out of Lucky Wish), ran in a Six Furlong Maiden Special race at Lone Star Park (LS) on Friday, May 1.  Lucky made his debut in March over a sloppy race track at Sam Houston Park, and was subsequently entered in a race at LS in April that was cancelled due to severe weather.  As such, this was Lucky's second start.

“Mother Nature wasn't very kind to our racing plans in the first quarter," said Fred Taylor, Mojo's CEM.  "Lucky's first race was in the slop.  And, the second time we entered him, the race was cancelled due to a monsoon that blew in 30 minutes before post time.  So, we were hoping for sunny skies and a dry track for this race.  Both the weather and the track conditions were perfect, and we were finally able to see how Lucky would run in order to determine at what level of racing he is capable of competing."

Just like his debut, Luckbyjimminy started from Post Position #2 and came out of the gate a step behind the other horses.  He quickly rallied to get behind the front runners going down the backstretch.  Into the far turn, Luckbyjimminy he chased the pace; but, he was unable to accelerate as the horses made their way past the quarter pole.  Down the stretch, Lucky was able to maintain his stride and he held on to finish 5th.

"The slow starts aren't helping him," Fred explains.  "He has a good turn of foot from the start, which is helping him get back into the race; but, the problem is, he's running out of gas after he rounds the turn and heads for home ."

"He's quick early; but he can't carry the speed against that level of competition,” reports JR Caldwell, Mojo’s Trainer.  “For his next race, we'll drop him down in class; switch over to the grass; and shorten up the distance to see if that helps him be more competitive.”

"He's a fun little racehorse to have in the barn," Fred says.  "And, once we find the right spot for him, he'll get his Mojo work'n."
