Left Coast Dreams in the Slop at Remington Park

August 31, 2016

Mojo's two-year-old, Left Coast Dreams (by Haynesfield out of LA Dreamin), ran in a one mile race on a sloppy track at Remington Park (RP) on Wednesday, August 31.  This was Lefty's 5th start in his racing career and his first race going two turns.

“Now that City Slicker has been retired, I guess this guy is the new rain maker,” said Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM.  “Two of his last three races have been affected by stormy conditions.

A deluge of afternoon storms across Oaklahoma City and a steady drizzle throughout the evening created a rain-soaked racetrack that tested Left Coast Dreams' ability to pick ‘em up and put ‘em down at the distance.

When the gates opened, Jockey Iram Diego hustled Left Coast Dreams from the outside starting spot to the front going around the Clubhouse turn.  Down the backstretch, the pair stayed outside of the sloppy kickback stalking the pace.  Going into the turn, Diego called on Lefty to go forward and the two made their move vying for the lead.  At the top of the stretch; however, Left Coast Dreams ran out of gas and couldn’t go forward.  In the stretch, Lefty kept trying and he held on to finish 5th.

After the race, Diego reported: “I like the way he responded coming out of the gate and when I asked him to go in the turn.  So, we were in a good spot all the way around the track; but he just got tired in the stretch.  He never stopped trying, and I think he’s good at this distance—just not today.”

"Of course, the sloppy conditions elevated the challenge and may have cost him a better finish," Fred explains.  "Nevertheless, I liked the way Lefty came out of the gate, was getting over the track, and how his racing mind and heart never gave up.  He came back to the barn in good order; and after JR (Mojo's Trainer) evaluates the way the horse covered this route of ground, he'll decide what's the best spot for Lefty's next race."
