Left Coast Dreams Bogged Down at Prairie Meadows

June 30, 2016

Mojo's two-year-old, Left Coast Dreams (by Haynesfield out of LA Dreamin), ran in a five furlong race on a muddy track at Prairie Meadows (PRM) on Thursday, June 30.  This was Lefty's 3rd start in his racing career.

“We asked him to do too much at this stage of his development,” said Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM.  “Racing on 12 days rest, following a 10-hour haul to Iowa a few days prior, and running over a muddy race track was more than he was fully ready to handle.

Left Coast Dreams came out of the gate well and was sitting off the pace along the backside; but he flattened out going around the far turn and was empty down the stretch to finish 6th - an uncharacteristic performance based in his recent racing efforts and morning works.

“Lefty was essentially racing on half a tank and we didn't realize that,” Fred explains. “He shipped well from Texas to Iowa, and was feeling good about himself on race day; but, once the race was on, he simply didn't have the endurance he needed to go forward."

In his previous race (which was his 2nd lifetime start), Left Coast Dreams showed signs of forward prorgess to finish 3rd even though he was coming back from an illness that had depleted his stamina.  In this race, he started well and the rider said he galloped out strong into the bit digging past the wire.

Mojo’s Trainer, JR Caldwell, said: "Tonight, he told us he's not ready for all of the things we asked him to do on short notice. He trains and handles himself very well when he's on the racetrack; but we got ahead of ourselves.  He's also a young horse that's still growing and we've asked him to work through some challenges thus far in his career.  He has some talent and he just needs more time to get up to speed."

“We're going to chalk up this race as a live workout and throw out the result,” Fred says. Rather than ask him to endure another long-haul trip back to Texas and stew in the triple-digit heat down here, we're also going to keep Lefty in Iowa where it's cooler.  If he rebounds and is in good shape, we'll point him toward the same race at PRM toward the end of July.”
