City Slicker's Making Progress

May 19, 2016

Mojo's three-year-old, Heza City Slicker (by City Zip out of Sheza Nasty Lady), ran in a five furlong race at Lone Star Park (LS) on Thursday, May 19.  This was City Slicker's 2nd start in 2016 and the 2nd time his race was moved from the turf to the main track—which was muddy.

“Despite the ongoing weather disruptions, City Slicker is making progress,” said Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM.  “We haven’t had a chance to see if he can handle sprinting on the grass—so far, we’ve just had to live with the unfavorable change in race conditions and wait for a better day.

At the start, Heza City Slicker put in a game effort to get up with the pace through the first half of the race; but he lacked a closing kick in the final furlong to challenge the horses that are in better shape to handle the mud.  City Slicker grew tired after he turned for home, but he was able to maintain his established pace and hold off the rest of the field to hang on and finish 4th.

“In this race, City Slicker actually demonstrated that his stamina is starting to come around,” Fred explains. “Even though we haven’t been able to run in the ideal racing conditions (on a firm turf), Slick’s first 2 races this year are actually serving a better purpose—elevating his fitness.”

Mojo’s Trainer, JR Caldwell, said: "I was hoping we’d get to see what he can do sprinting on the grass; but the weather keeps knocking us off the turf.  The only things we can do about it are hope for better weather and get ready to try again."

There are several 5F and 7.5F turf races listed in the condition book coming up in June.  Based on Slick’s progress, we’ll evaluate the options and go from there.  So, stay tuned in this regard.

“Other than griping about the weather, there’s nothing to get discouraged about,” Fred offers assurances.  City Slicker is starting to come around and last night’s effort is another step toward getting him back into top racing form.”
