Brigid Returns Too Soon
The conditions turned out to be favorable: Small field, short distance, and a dry/fast track.
“There really aren’t any excuses,” Trainer John Good admitted. “She looked fantastic—definitely the best looking horse in the race. She was nice and relaxed; there wasn’t a thing wrong with her; and I wouldn’t have run if I didn’t think she had a solid chance to win.”
The track odds maker had her as the morning line favorite; and the bettors felt she was much the best - her final odds were 6 to 5.
The race was one of the fastest run on the night at IND. The horses were moving on the front end; and by the time they reached the wire, the final time was a respectable flat. “She may not have liked being on the rail,” John said. “But I think the race two weeks ago took more out of her than I realized.”
We’ll have to eat a little humble pie with this one and not get discouraged. “I’ll make sure she gets more rest and find a good spot for her next race,” John said. “We just have to shake this off and move forward.”
Saint Brigid Races at Indiana Downs
On a rain-soaked afternoon, SB returned to racing at Indiana Downs (IND) on Wednesday, May 6, 2009.
Originally scheduled for the turf, the 7.5 furlong race was moved from the grass to the sloppy main track. Brigid seemed to handle the track without any problems. She challenged the pace from the start for about six furlongs; but eventually tired at the top of the stretch and finished fifth.
SB came out of the race in good condition; and we plan to find a good spot her to run again at IND in the near future. Please stay tuned.
