Mojo Thoroughbred Holdings, LLC is pleased to announce the Jockey Club has approved “Heza City Slicker” as the name for our 2YO Colt!

Heza City Slicker was purchased as a Yearling at the 2014 Keeneland September Sale, and is now a handsome/feisty 2YO Bay Colt by City Zip out of Sheza Nasty Lady.  To read more about Heza City Slicker’s pedigree, click: Hip 1726

“Before submitting our name choices to the Jockey Club Registry, we surveyed our Partners and Fans several times inviting them to tell us what they like,” explains Fred Taylor, Mojo’s CEM.  “We took this approach last year when we named two of our other horses.  I liked the process because it gives everyone a fun opportunity to participate, and I wanted to try it again.  The name we ultimately submitted pays tribute to the both the sire and dam, and I think it's a clever combination of their nomenclature too.”

Mojo Naming Process

For two weeks in February, name ideas for the new Mojo Runner were gathered; they were reviewed against the Jockey Club’s Online Name Book; and several surveys were sent/posted to invite the Partners in the group, all Mojo Partners, and our Fans to take part in the naming process.  A participation deadline was set, the votes were tallied, and the results are in!

“Much to my surprise,” Fred reported, “The race ended in a 3-name dead heat!  Of the total votes cast, three names received the same number votes each.”

Following the traditional standards of the racing office to settle a tie, Mojo conducted a 3-way shake to pick the name of the horse that would be submitted to the Jockey Club.  We assigned a green pill, a red pill, and a yellow pill to each name.  The pills were placed in a julep cup, the cup was shaken, and the first pill drawn (under the watchful eyes of two trustworthy witnesses) would be our top choice.

The winning name selected was:  Heza City Slicker

We switched people and drew a second colored pill to determine the first alternate (in case the Jockey Club rejected the first name), and the remaining pill would be our second back up.

All three names were submitted to the Registry in order of the shake, and The Jockey Club approved our first choice!
